Frequently Asked Questions
If I go through recruitment am I obligated to join?
No! Recruitment is designed for you to get to know the Panhellenic organizations on campus, and while we wish you each the best of luck in finding a sisterhood to join, participation in recruitment does not force you to join an organization.
If I receive a bid, may I decline?
Yes, if you receive a bid and are uncomfortable accepting/signing the bid, you may decline. In this case, you may not participate in recruitment for one calendar year—you would be ineligible to receive a bid from an organization for the remainder of Spring 2019 and Fall 2019; however, you could participate in formal recruitment in Spring 2020. You also may not participate in Continuous Open Bidding.
Is there a minimum grade point average in order to be in a sorority?
Yes, The College of New Jersey Panhellenic Association requires a minimum 2.5 GPA and minimum of 12 credits.
What is a New Member Education Period?
Every TCNJ Panhellenic Organization has a New Member Education Period, for a maximum of six weeks, during which new members learn about the history, values, and philanthropy of the sisterhood they have just joined.
Do new members get hazed?
No! Hazing is prohibited by the State of New Jersey, The College of New Jersey, Panhellenic Association, and individual organizations and chapters. If you feel that you are being hazed, or know of a hazing incident, report it immediately to the Panhellenic Council, or by contacting the Greek Advisor, Dave Conner.
I have heard that sororities have various reputations. How should I handle that info?
Sororities are composed of individuals, with their own special qualities and talents that contribute to the group. When deciding to join a chapter, the only opinion that matters is your own. If you allow someone else’s perception to influence you, you will not be satisfied with your choices during recruitment. Each chapter of a sorority is different from campus to campus and from year to year. Remember, you are choosing a sisterhood, not a label!
